More than 100 sumptuous costumes and 130 impressive masks testify to the artist’s huge output for theatre productions of plays by Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides to Shakespeare, Chekov and Terzakis.
Yannis Metzikof was born in Crete. He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts; painting under Yannis Moralis and theatre set design under Vassilis Vassileiadis. Since 1980, he has participated in numerous painting exhibitions and performances in Athens, Spain, Belgium, Russia. He has also designed sets and costumes for numerous productions of all genres at the Greek National Theatre, the Athens Concert Hall, the Cyprus Theatre Organisation, the Greek National Opera, the State Theatre of Northern Greece and for many private companies. His exhibitions have been hosted at the Patras Festival, the Zoumboulakis Gallery, and the Alexander Pushkin Museum, Moscow (1995). A painter, sculptor, installation artist, Metzikof is also a set and costume designer. He has worked with almost all Greek directors: Kakoyannis, Volanakis, Voutsinas, Koundouros, Evangelatos, Michailidis, Tsianos, Houvardas, Nikoloudi.
The exhibition Yannis Metzikof, Theatrical Costumes and Masks — From the Stage to the Museum is accompanied by a large-format catalogue, featuring essays by Marina Lambraki-Plaka and Takis Mavrotas which discuss the distinguished artist’s contribution to the theatre. It was realised with the support of Messrs Kyriakos Tsingiroglou, Marianna Latsis, Marina Theocharaki, Petros Kyriakidis, Thodoros Venetsanos, Antonis Lakiotis (Lakiotis S.A. and Club Hotel Casino Loutraki).
