Mengoulas Giorgos

He studied interior design and fashion drawing in Athens and went on to Paris to study advertising and sculpture at the Ecole des Beaux Arts with Henri Martin, Cesar and Rene Collamarini. In 1977 and 1979, he studied and practised monument restoration on UNESCO scholarship.

His work has been presented in solo exhibitions; he has also participated in group exhibitions, including the 1975 Panhellenic exhibition, the Salon des Artistes Francais in Paris, exhibitions of the Association of Greek Sculptors, as well as the exhibition of contemporary Greek sculpture “La Sculpture Grecque Contemporaine” in Paris (1991).

Giorgos Mengoulas’s oeuvre is characterized by his incessant questioning of space, of the Greek light and movement, expressed in constructivist compositions or abstract iron and marble constructions, whose subjects are frequently inspired from the marine world. Along with his free compositions, he has also created public site monuments in various regions of Greece; in them, his inspiration from archaic Greek sculpture is evident.
